To start with, metals like nickel, copper ,brass are not tolerated by all equally. The skin tends to react in some way causing irritation.Gold and silver are the safest metals as they do not react on contact with the skin(in most cases).Go for higher carat gold jewelry as it contains less amount of impurities and hence 18K or 22K jewelry is preferred. In case of silver, the impurities are very less and is considered pure.

I am not too sure that is the exact answer, but yes it is indirectly correct that there will be irritation with the skin, but I think GOLD is a noble metal and it does not oxidize. Copper will will be subject to corrosion in the presence of "Pure water and air/oxygen" and all the other important metals including silver has similar problems. But, the corrosion of silver is very less compared to other metals. Now days even processed Steel is getting used but at the end GOLD and Silvers are meant to protect you in your distress days. It is an investment indirectly.

Along with suitability, corrosion is also an important factor. As said, gold and silver do not corrode and hence suits the skin better.
