The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds is one of those marriage of convenience evolves into something else kind of movies that just might be interesting. Recently I enjoyed watching similarly themed Contract Lover, a film produced in Hong Kong starring Richie Ren and Fan Bingbing.
In The Proposal Bullock plays a high powered workaholic book editor, Margaret, who is threatened with deportation to her native Canada. To stay in the country, Margaret quickly cooks up a scheme to marry her assistant, Andrew. Since Margaret has been the kind of boss on the level of Miranda Priestly and Murphy Brown, this is not a match made in heaven.
To be honest, I havent really enjoyed watching a romantic comedy starring Bullock since Love Potion No 9. However since I did enjoy watching her in Premonition last year, Ill put The Proposal on my to-watch list. Not something Ill run out to get tomorrow, but one day Ill check it out.
Actually, the proposal is very good. It has depth to it and Sandra Bullock does a good job taking the serious parts seriously. The beginning is almost a clone of Two Weeks Notice with Hugh Grant, but once they get to Sitka, that ghost of Two Weeks Notice past (which I loved, incidentally) vanishes and Bullock takes a fresh approach. I really enjoyed it. oh, the ghost does come back for a few minutes at the end...but...not enough to ruin the momentum that built up in Alaska.
