Well...the thing is that people live in a stereotype. Everyone does - including you. And me, of course. But ours is different from the one of the majority - people, living in the path of their moms and grandmas and great - grandmas etc, having families, raising children, the idea whot the woman shold be and what the man should be and their porpouse for being on this earth....
Everyone wants to get as many people as possible into his stereotype - that's a communal instinct - if I may call it so. Because, when more people think like you and live like you, that gives each one a sence of satisfaction - that you're fit...normal...nothing's wrong with you. And that's what makes a community.
When you're different, you're out of the community - out of everything. Which makes you an outsider - in the best case...or a dangerous one - in the worst - in both cases, one that needs to be removed!
And that's the way it goes - not since yesterday, not in your case - everywhere!
That's why different people have always been hated, persued and isolated - a hatred, based on colour, creed, nationality, sexual orientation etc. - it has never been based on any of that stuff - it's been based on that basic fear of everything different.
Think of that - it's nothing personal, you've done nothing wrong, you are not wrong. You're just different and that scares people different from you. And that's it.
Az you can see - you're not the only one in this position.
