I can't find a good local source for orchid (potting) bark, but a local garden supply place told me they have been selling bark mulch to some orchid growers. The mulch they have certainly looks - even smells - like the potting bark I've had in the past. Can anyone tell me why it wouldn't work for repotting my orchids?

Bark mulch is not the same thing. I would not try putting my orchids in it. You might be able to find an online vendor who has potting medium, usually it is not heavy. I've seen orchid bark in nurseries and hardware stores (Lowe's, Walmart, Home Depot) here in Texas.
