I hope you don't mind my popping into this forum to do a little research for something (fiction) I'm writing.

I was wondering something -- if you lived in a nation where, in order to have full privileges of citizenship, you had to be a Christian -- voting, lower taxes, etc. -- would you a. openly keep your religion b. privately keep your religion while giving an outward appearance of Christianity or c. truly convert. (I suspect there would be people in all categories, but just want a feel from people. And I realize, unless you are in that situation, it is hard to truly know how you would react!)

Well, this is as good a place for my 1st post as any. I couldn't choose any of the options, Atheism isn't a religion...so I would probably find another country to live in.

Well being that I think most of the time people have to hide, if I was stuck there I guess I'd fake it.

I would like to say, that I'd be brave and live an openly atheist lifestyle. But would I really, considering all the advantages you mentioned? Probably not. I'd swim with the current just like everyone else... and secretly admire those few heroes who stand up against it. smile

Thank you for posting.

Actually, this has occurred to me as something that could very well happen. If you consider Unitarian Universalists to be Christian, then sure, my solution would be to join them. But very likely my husband and I would pack up our things and head north or overseas.

Is leaving the country actually an option or do I have to stay?

Since I've faked it before I'm sure I could do it again if I really had to, but it would grate now that I know better. It might make us seriously consider leaving our country if it became too oppressive.
