I think it's part of his personna to be such a sarcastic, snide person - but that makes it even more amazing to watch when he is geniunely impressed, like he was with Ms. Boyle.

Here is an interesting article in the Guardian which talks about our reaction to Susan Boyle. Do you agree? Guardian article

I think the article is exagerated but probably not that far off the mark. Susan Boyle's singing brings me to tears and I am proud of her for not getting a makeover before going on stage. Real talent wins out - she sort of reminds me of the great chef Julia Child. There is room at the top or the bottom for whomever chooses to reside there, or is delegated there by their attitudes and actions.

Actually, I'm sure Susan will be given a makeover, but no matter, her voice will remain

I agree with the article that there was no reason other than spite for those two judges to point out to her that everyone hated her. Why say such a nasty thing prior to praising her? To me it seemed like they were sort of saying "Okay, you can really sing, but you can't blame us for thinking you were nothing - after all, *everyone* thought you were a loser, so that makes it okay."

And I think that the Guardian article, despite its claiming otherwise, did the same thing. Why make fun of her dress? It was clear to me that she had gotten all dressed up in her Sunday-go-to-church clothes, there was no need to make a snide comment about it.

I too think she'll get a makeover, but I hope that she stands firm and doesn't let them make her into what *they* think she should look like. She needs her eyebrows tamed a little, and could use a better haircut, but I would hate to see her lose her individuality. I shudder every time I watch one of the those 'makeover' shows because everyone comes out of it looking exactly the same.

I don't like that show because I think the judges are very rude and insulting. As you say, everyone is different; we all have our special talents. As they say, "don't judge a book by it's cover."

It's a shame when looks play a bigger part than talent. She probably is doing the best she can with what she was born with and where she came from. That should not override the powerful talent Susan has in the eyes of the critics.

Tweaking a person's look so that they are more "presentable" as an entertainer is one thing, but performing a total do-over is another.

I agree - I hope she keeps to who she is. What a wonderful talent and I'm glad she is being given the chance to share it with the world.

This original question in this thread is about Simon and I think he knows what he is talking about, but he could express his thoughts in a much better and more humane way. These singers are putting themselves before the whole world and doing the best they can. He needs to take that into consideration before he blasts them with negativity.

Creative crits are much kinder and probably better received.

Mary Ellen,

BTW, I saw her CNN interview today at her home and she has had her hair cut and styled and it looks gorgeous. She left everything else the same.
