I bought 3 budgies from a lady that had kept them in a flight cage. They have been with me for nearly a month now and still will not step up or allow me to touch them without biting me. When I open the cage door and allow them to come out on their own they will fly around the room and perch on top of other things but the minute I go to touch them or try to ask them to step up they bite and it is hard enough to bring blood. I am at my wits end as to how I stop this. Mabel

It is very difficult to tame birds that are with other birds all the time. If you can take one away into another room and work with it alone for some time, you are more apt to get results. It won't happen overnight, but you can tame them with patience.

Thanks, I will try that. I have hand raised 4 other budgies and they also had to be taken to a different room to train, so I will have patience and try with these 3. (the bitting hurts though). With luck soon they will be fine.

I have a female cockatiel that was severely handled. It took almost a year before she stepped onto a hand. I used a small piece of wooden perch until she learned I wouldn't hurt her. I spent part of every day alone with her on my lanai. She came with a pretty severe wing trim, so when she began flight she could not go far and was forced to rely on me to "save" her when she landed. It has now been two years and she steps up fine, she will kiss me and sit on my shoulder. I'm still not allowed to pet her or touch her. It must all be on her terms. Patience, patience, patience (and perhaps a wing trim?).

We just adopted 2 green cheeks. The boy, Boris,[age 6] is a sweetheart. Cloie is a bitter >age 1 1/2. I came on here is ask about biting and training her. She is just finishing molting and has pin feathers coming in.
From the postings, I guess it is just patience. I think I will will work with a perch first and graduate from there.

Pervious owners said wings are clipped. How often should that be done?
Thanks
Linda

The articles posted at the top of this topic have tips and ideas to get a bird past the biting stage. There are no guarantees (of course) because each bird is an individual and will respond at his or her own time. Patience is a key factor though as well as learning to read your bird to avoid bites.

As far as wing clipping - that is a personal matter according to what is best for your bird as well as for you. Sometimes clipping wings is a good way to tame a bird because they can't fly away - but the clipping must be done properly.

You can find an article on wingclipping at Wingclipping

Thanks, Mavis.
We have printed off the article while we are working with the birds. I tried to contact the pervious owners to see if we were missing something Cloie likes. Emails bounce back and no answer on the phone.
Anyway, we accidental found out they both loves apples. So as a good behavior [no biting] they each get a small piece.
I hope to start growing grrens for them soon. Found a really nice bird shop here in North Dallas. Has been in business for a long time.
Will keep you posted.
Linda
