Hi everyone,

I've mentioned the childfree group No Kidding a few times on this board as a place for people to make friends. The Vancouver, Canada chapter was the first, but recently I heard that the chapter, founded 24 years ago, was closing. The founder writes that he started the club because he couldn't find any other childfree groups around and wanted to meet other likeminded people. The group has international chapters now and new chapters spring up all the time; despite this, the Vancouver chapter's membership has been steadily decreasing. At the same time, the founder has become much more involved in promoting No Kidding internationally. He writes that there are many other childfree groups out there now and that the decision to remain childfree is now quite commonplace in this city, so the Vancouver chapter of No Kidding no longer had much of a purpose.

I found this fascinating...the idea that it was no longer necessary to have a childfree club because it was becoming more common as a lifestyle choice. I know many of you live in cities where the opposite is true, but maybe there's some hope out there!

I sense that there is a change in how people view producing children. At one time it would be automaticly assumed that children would arrive.Couples with no children were thought to be unable to have children. That awful word 'barren' used to describe women unable to have a child seems to have disappeared from the vocabulary thankfully. Now for all sorts of reasons people are making concious life style choices that include remaining child free. So yes there is hope that ultimatly all choices will be welcome

Perhaps because there are more people in Vancouver who are childfree it is easier to meet likeminded people in other ways...so the need for a social group is less. _________________________ www.ChildfreeCommunity.com The first and only social network dedicated exclusively to the Childfree!
