With today's economy being as it is, fewer people are going to the doctor or buying OTC medicines, remedies when they are sick with a cold/flu. I prefer natural remedies for all of those reasons as well as the fact that I just don't like to take medicine or supplements if it can be avoided. One of my favorite remedies when I have a cold is peppermint tea. It's just so soothing and then there's the whole decongestant thing because of the mint and steam. I posted more such natural remedies on the Allergies and Colds page in Natural Cold Remedies at allergiesandcolds@bellaonline.com

This one might a bit controversial but I've witnessed its efficacy!

This comes from an ex-brother-in-law. Whenever he began to come down with a cold, he'd swig a small shot of whiskey then bundle up really warm. Sweatsuit, socks, beanie and a heavy blanket. Then, he'd go to sleep.

He insisted that he'd "sweat" out the cold and wake up feeling much better. The cold, if not gone, would be lessen in severity instead of worsening.

I think the alcohol, which is not only antiseptic, raised his body temperature which naturally killed off invading bacteria in his body. I don't want to pass along any questionable or dangerous old wives' tales, but he proved his theory every time he had a cold.

If you look at the ingredients of Nyquil and such, it contains alcohol, too.

Alcohol should never be given to infants and children. And, those with liver and kidney problems shouldn't imbibe alcohol either. There are health and religious reasons to abstain as well.

I just wanted to throw this tidbit out here to see if anyone else can provide insight as to why it worked.

If you have a cold, there is no 'cure' except the bodies own defenses. You can help this along by keeping up fluids and nutrition. Any medication you take is just reducing they symptoms of your cold, they are not curing it.

Rest is important too. What I do for my family is to keep our immune systems healthy so we don't get colds. If you eat a nutritional diet, get lots of sleep, drink lots of water and take vitamins, this goes a long way to improving your immunity.

Other things I use are green tea, fresh garlic and an herbal extract called astralagus, which is an immune booster.

Awesome suggestions! Thanks, everyone, for sharing your ideas. Here's another one I have tried to boost my body's immune system. Drink three times a day one cup of warm water with 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract (GSE) added. You also can add a few drops of GSE to your Neti Pot rinse.

Oh, and here's another one that's great for a stuffy nose or sinus headache. Dab a drop or two of pure peppermint extract near the nasal passages. It's guaranteed to open your nasal passages up.

I love peppermint extract. Did you know that the aroma of peppermint is energizing? I have some peppermint essential oil that I open in the kitchen in the mornings to get us off to a good start for the day.
