Hello, I'm new to this site, and new to the world of Betta's. I have 4 bettas (started w/one, and got hooked..hehe), and 2 small 2.5 gallon tanks. Each tank has a divider to separate the Males from each other, so they are safe. My question is---is this a healthy environment for them? They are all making bubbles, which I've read is a good thing---and they are all eating well, very curious of each other (and flex often), but also seem to enjoy their home, and seem content and very happy. My 2nd question is about the light issue I've been reading about. I've been turning the light off in their tanks at night, but wonder if I should leave it on all the time, as not to fluctuate the temperature. They don't seem to act any differently from day to day, so I'm not sure if I should change my (their) routine...what do you think? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Welcome to the forum. Yep you got addicted really quick LOL

Two things I would suggest...Get a thermometer. If your tank stays in the mid 70 to preferably 80 consistently then they are fine with just what you are doing. If the temps are fluctuating several degrees between day time with light and night time when you turn it off I would suggest you go to Walmart and buy 2 jr heaters. They are like $6.97 each. Little blue gray submersible things. I have those same tanks. I have a jr heater in each of them, and a male and female in each which works fine too. My tanks stay at a constant 80 with the jr heater which is prime temp for your bettas to live long healthy lives. They need a day and night cycle so I like turning my lights off at night...and I know their temps are constant. I expect them to live long healthy ives in this environment, and I won't be buying as many lightbulbs either which is a good trade off for the price of running the heater.

Good luck.

Post pictures tell us more about your little guys.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I will definately go get the Jr. Heaters, as I too like the idea of turning the light off at night--but understand that the temperature needs to remain constant. I'll try to get some pictures of the boys, and post them as soon as possible. They are really a lot of fun, and they are so friendly (to me anyway---hehe), and learn very quickly where to get the food, and who's going to bring it to them--- :rolling: I know when I go to Wal-Mart to look for the heaters, I'm going to have to pass the fish ---(be strong....don't look---hehe) is what I'll keep telling myself... Take care!!

You're welcme and I totally relate to the "don't look part" when I go to Walmart's fish section. It is so so hard!!!

Well, I just got back from Wal-Mart, and they didn't have any termometers.. , so I didn't get the heaters just yet. I would like to get the termometers first, to test the temps during the day and evening hours. I'll check back in a few days, or try a pet store a little later today. I do have another question about feeding. The first Betta I got (Tough Guy), he snubs the pellets I've tried, but loves the freeze dried blood worms of course. Should I keep trying the pellets? The other 3 will eat both, so I know they are getting a good variety. I just wonder if only feeding blood worms is a bad idea...

I did stop and look at the Betta's of course, but I didn't see anything "extraordinary", which is what I use to keep me from bringing another one home---hehe. But, if I find a "purple" one, I'm in trouble........

The only place I have found to get the jr submersible heaters is Walmart..so hopefully you can find a thermometer at the Petstore and then go get the heaters...Walk quickly by any gorgeous little fish stacked in small containers looking bored and miserable ...well unless of course it is purple. Good Luck

Hi RNS----if you throw your husband out, who will mow the lawn, while your inside admiring your beautiful fishies??? I have 4 fishies, and am so tempted to get more, but I keep telling myself that I don't have any place to put them-----unless of course I find a beautiful purple one---then I'll find a place---hehe!!

Good luck with your babies, and post some pics!!

Blu,
You're the one looking for a purple betta! I found one last night by accident when browsing through the fish at a pet store. He's really pretty, so I had to buy him! Here's hoping you find your Graple guy soon.

Hi, my name is Nannynan, and I'm a betta addict.
