Hey, Bonnie! You hit the nail on the head when you said you suspected Hannah may have asperger's. I've been suspecting that for about a year & I asked her pyschiatrist for a firm diagnosis if she felt comfortable giving a diagnosis. After looking at all the evaluation reports I've given her over the past few months including a neuro-pysch report, she said Hannah has asperger's.

I honestly don't care what Hannah has as long as I could get a diagnosis - if one applied. Glad she isn't bi-polar, though.

This will be really helpful when dealing with Hannah's schools in the future. Much easier to say "Hannah has Asperger's" than to say "Hannah has OCD, depression, anxiety, violent verbal outbursts, social issues, transitional issues, etc".

That is exactly what I said about Michael when they first dx him with:
depression
adhd
ocd
odd (oppositional/defiant disorder)
and about 3 others

I said "how can one little 8 yr old boy have all these things?"

Then the Asperger's dx came and it fit an made so much more sense.

A diagnosis can help a great deal in many areas, glad that this aspect is over. There are lots of books too that help a child learn about their diagnosis, when the time is right, it helps them be more aware of their issues and they help in promoting awareness to others.

I remember years ago when we were at SSI office and my HFA son told the security guard about Matthew. Then a few years later he did the same thing at the library when the security officer looked at Matthew.

About 1-2 yrs ago we were at this laundromat during a holiday break that is a big building with a Subway and Starbucks inside. Matt just runs laps around the inside and there was a police officer getting coffee and I was at the machines. Nick was at the section for folding reading a book and the officer went over to talk to him, he had seen Matthew stop each time he went around to see my other son. He was a bit scared of the cop who asked where the parent was and he pointed to me. Those autism shirts come in handy, except winter time when a jacket covers the message up.

Good luck

My fiance is not happy with Hannah being "labelled". He is afraid she will be put somewhere & forgotten. I told him no way! I'm her mother. I don't let things go. LOL I did tell him that having the "asperger" label will help a lot with the schools. So much easier to say "asperger" AND they will understand she is a smart girl with emotional & behavioral issues instead of being "retarded" or something. Makes it easier to convince the schools to put her into a classroom where they actually teach something, but help her with her other issues.

So happy I'm getting this sorted out before puberty hits :-)

Tell M that hannah is very lucky. I'd love to know what my Dx is and my life would have been much easier to know there was actually an issue, *a real thing* that is *not my fault* going on, rather than some horrible character flaws that i have to feel guilty about. smile
