For the authors among us, pubbed and unpubbed, do you set concrete goals for yourself each year? Or do you wing it? If you set goals, have you worked out your goals for next year yet?

I have recently decided to give writing a novel a try. I have began by just trying to define my characters. One technique I have tried and like is sitting down by myself and pretending the character is in the room with me and I'm asking them questions. It seems like I get a good idea about their voice and personality. After I have defined my characters I will begin the outline of the story. Though I have already started the story in my head:) I'm not looking to be published and become rich, I just think it would be an awesome achievement to look back on and say that I did that! If anybody can offer advice I would appreciate it.

If you're serious about writing a novel, the first thing I'd suggest is to look for a writers' group in your area. If you're planning a romance novel, www.rwanational.org lists the chapters they have all around the country, so you may find one near you. If you're planning something besides romance, there may still be a group near you. In PA, for example, there's a fine multi-genre group called Pennwriters that welcomes authors of all sorts. Other states/cities have groups like this as well. It's just a matter of figuring out what you want to write.

Thank you very much! I have looked at the website and have even found that my favorite writer is going to be speaking at their annual conference. I truly appreciate the help you have given me by showing me this foundation.
