Has anyone else out there been noticing the current 'fashion' in maternity clothes? It used to be that all maternity tops were loose, flowing things that covered bellies about to pop, but now? Holy COW! It seems every pregnant woman I see is wearing these super clingy latex things that makes their bellies look like giant watermelons! You can even see the bellybutton popping outwards from the pressure... Is that just in my area (Colorado, USA) or is it elsewhere?

EWWWWW!!!!!

Sorry, but I find that just a little more information than I want or need. When, WHEN can we go back to discrete? It's not like we don't KNOW your pregnant, it's quite obvious, but please don't make it possible for a stranger to count your stretch marks. That's just nasty...

Yeah, the short-shirts with the belly hanging out below get me too. They look attractive on so few people to begin with!

Ewwww I saw a photo of Kate Hudson when she was pregnant and she had a skimpy halter top on with a band-aid of a mini-skirt. Stomach out in full glory. It was really gross. Totally skanky in my opinion.

Totally agree! It's gross, though I made a comment (should've kept my mouth shut) to a Mom once, something kinda like "isn't your stomach cold? don't you worry about people staring?" well, didn't I get an earful about how "glorious" pregnancy is and how everyone should admire and celebrate the bringing of a new life (or some other shiz like that). Oy vey! I put on my best customer service smile, apologized thru my teeth and walked away. Luckily I was at a rather large outdoor gathering and could easily blend in elsewhere. (Though I did catch a few nasty looks from her and other like-minded mothers ... and then proceeded to take a large swig out of my beer bottle hee hee hee). I know, not entirely polite, but it sure made me feel better about asking a simple question.

I am not the lycra type, but I have worn bikinis being pretty pregnant. I hated my body but it was not my fault looking like that, what can you do? Spending 100 euros in a maternity swimming costume? No way. I like the fresh air anyway. I must admit it was for me a kick to notice how uncomfortable some people feel about it. Because, my dear childfree friends, it is not only you who feel disgusted. It is unbelievable how uncomfortable very conservative people, the kind that have so many children as God sends them, for example, can feel about it. I felt like yelling at them: "Don't be ashamed to look directly at it. It is the miracle of life, isn't it?"

I have to say that if I see a pregnant woman with the belly button showing, whether the shirt covers it or not, it makes me literally gag. Belly buttons aren't the cleanest of places on the human body, and pregnant women gross me out anyway, plus that belly button...it's all so disgusting to me.

I'm all for people wearing what they want, but don't expect me to look at a pregnant woman and say she's pretty. Whether or not she's covered up, the big stomach makes me cringe...I have to stop writing about this!! smile

I feel the same way about pregnant bellies and breast feeding as I do with sexual intercourse -- keep it under cover (at least mostly)!! There are some lovely maternity clothes out there that look good but don't excentuate the pregnancy.

On pregnancy and comfort factors, I think your background as a child dictates how you eventually feel as an adult about the clothing thing. I am one of two children (brother is three years younger), so I didn't vividly remember the "pregnancy experience" of my mother. On top of that, my mother raised me to have a sense of shame when it comes down to sexual matters AND pregnancy. As a child, she never wanted me to talk to women about their pregnancies because it was rude. On the other side of the spectrum, I have friends with several siblings that were raised in a household where the mother's pregnancy was discussed openly, and they now feel good talking about their pregnancies and sharing the experience. Having said that, I think this is mostly why I think pregnant women should sport loose, modest clothing (and my friends with children think I'm a bit of a weirdo in that sense!).
