hey jilly.. how are you? haven't heard from me in awhile aye...

i've got a big problem with ujio.. he started to get fin rot a while ago, say maybe 3 weeks ago and his tail was growing back slowly and now he's developed fin rot again.. i don't understand how. he's in his own container being treated with battafix and sometimes melafix.

starting to get a li'l worried.. do you think that it'd be an idea to cut some of his tail off? i've read other people doing that but i'm not sure if i want to.

thanx

Man I tried to send you a long reply but got some strange error message, so will make it brief this time.

Jilly needs to respond to this first ///
Do you have salt in the tank? Are you using Bettafix for 7 days and just removing the goop on the bottom with maybe a turkey baster to keep where his fins drag a little cleaner, maybe nOT putting bettafix and melafix in at the same time, Is water in mid 70's to 80 degrees. Hope that helps
Glo

I hate it when replies get snuffed out, Glo. When I write a long one these days I copy it before sending it, just in case.

Hi Kei, good to see you again. You might want to try a different gravel, or keep your gravel cleaner, or remove it entirely. When tails drag on it (some bettas like doing that), they get ripped, and in less than pristine water conditions fungus sets in immediatley.

About cutting the tail - yes, some people do that. I don't recommend it really - too easy to make a mistake. Salt is really good about killing fungus, and bettafix promotes good healing. try moving your little one to a hospital tank, get warmer temps and clean water. Add salt and bettafix. When he's well, consider keeping him gravel free, since he is so prone to finrot. let us know how it goes!

thanx guys.. got salt today and moved Ujio in to a sick bay tank... he's so lonely.. i'm hoping that he will recover.. i'm not too sure.. i just still don't understant how it started again.. but thats okay..

Glo.. thanx for your reply too.. i don't use bettafix and melafix together... it either one or the other.. i think i'll be sticking to melafix coz he's in a 7L tank and seems to be easier to measure out the amount than drops of bettafix..

advice taken about kepping temps up.. it about 80 now and he seems to be okay.. even though he's a li'l lonely.. i feel really bad coz he shrunk all of a sudden.. he's half his size..

i'll keep you posted..

hey some one mentioned putting peroxide in it tail.. hmmm..>/ finding that strange...

thanx heaps

there are lots of home remdedies. I don't know about pyroxide but i don't think it wold hurt. methylene Blue is better - you take your fish out, hold him on a towel, and wipe infected areas with methylelne blue (on a cotton ball). Then put him back in the tank.

This is really stressful on the fish, so only use it if you are getting depseratte. Stress is the biggest fish killer.
