Hercules is a big boy but he is afraid of everyone. He comes to the front of the bowl until we approach but then he hightails (!) it to the other side and hides. This is going on for a while. He's not friendly like the others we have. The only time he stays is when we feed him. Otherwise, he seems happy. He makes bubbles a lot.
Is this a personality trait others have seen?

Some fish are more skid-ish. How long have you had him? Maybe try wearing some neutral or pale colors (to imitate the coloring of females) and maybe then eventually he will be more outgoing and less intimidated.

My beta used to get so worked up when I wore dark or brightly colored clothes - because to them that means male and you are challenging them by being in their space.

I dunno. But If he is otherwise ok I think he will eventually calm down.

Hi, A lot of times, they are skidish at first. Once they get used to your routine and everything and everyone who is outside his tank, he feels secure and safe and is always happy to see you. On the other hand, if he hasn't got to feeling safe and secure and happy fairly quickly, he may be either sick and need some medical attention or you may need to rethink your approach to feeding and tank cleaning schedules and anything else in his environment that may be causing distress in order to put him in a healthy frame of mind and enjoy his life. Do you have dogs or is there loud noise or sunlight that is too bright or other things around him that you notice like that?
