Hello Everyone,

Just a short word of caution.

There are many crochet patterns for potholders, but they sometimes fail to mention the yarn that should be used.

Always use 100% cotton or wool. Never use synthic yarn because it easily melts at low temps.

We all love to make these gifts, but you sure do not want to cause severe burns.

Happy Holidays,

Linda

I am glad you mentioned this as I was wondering about them. What can one use for good insultion or backing for the crocheted potholders? Pinkrosessks

I'm a knitter, not much of a crocheter, but I do think the same thing holds true for both, in terms of insulation: what I do is make two identical pieces, and just stitch them together around the edge. The double-thickness is plenty of insulation, if you're using a good chunky yarn.

question: Are they thick enough that when you get stuff out of the oven; that you won't burn your hands? Pinkrosessks

What I have done in the past and it works great is to make two identical pot holders and then take an old cotton dish towel and cut it to fit for the inside. Then I sew it one the inside of one potholder (Tack it in the center as well so it doesn't come loose) and sew the other potholder on top of that one so it doesn't show. It is very insulated.

This link was posted on another topic in this forum by crochet queen about mysterious crocheted potholder pattern but it looks like it would be well insulated.

I have made several of the double thick diagonal "origami" potholders you linked to; however I often cut a piece of an old towel or face cloth and tack it into the potholder = VERY well insulated for hot pots!

I know I usually double mine up, I also let someone know if the potholder I make is mainly for show, like you cute fancy ones & not meant to pick up something hot. Putting the towel in there is a great idea! grin
