One important thing that has helped me lose weight is to keep a record of everything I eat. I have a small notebook that goes with me everywhere, and each time I have even a bite, I put it in the notebook. At the end of the day I add up the calories and fats and carbs just to get an idea of how I did, and compare it to how I "think" I did. It gives me a good start for the next day, knowing if I need to cut back on certain things, or if I'm right on track.

Hi Jay

This is definitely the best piece of advice for all beginners. Write down everything including your workouts.

It uncovers patterns, and shows you exactly why you are or are not getting results.

I always hand new clients a diet and fitness journal and then ask them to bring it in from time to time just to make sure they are keeping track.

The one thing I see in most people's journal is not enough vegetables or lean proteins. When people get this down they really begin to lose a lot of weight.
8-12 servings of veggies a day and protein at every meal is all it takes.

Your metabolism really gets going and your body gets into fat burning mode when you eat the right foods.

Check out all the best journals and get more tips on journaling your diet from my article: Diet Journals for Faster Weightloss

I totally agree about writing it all down. I got a great little weightloss journal that gives a place to record calories, exercise, weight, measurements and even little boxes to check off for each glass of water you drink. It also has pages of weightloss recipes and weightloss tips.

I reviewed this journal on my health blog if anyone would like more info on it.
