Hi!

I've done a bit of crafting but I don't have any experience working with fabric. I've focused more on yarn crafts. I'm interested in trying quilting.

Can you recommend a beginner quilting book that will give me the basics and maybe some easy projects to try?

Thanks!

Dear Reluctant, I usually wait for those people who know their craft to answer these questions before I offer my two-cents. But it's been a few days so here it is.

I can't recommend a book. I'm sure there are good ones out there. The only books I have are pattern books. What I would recommend is two fold. 1: See what your library has for borrowing, either books or DVDs. I'm sure there are good DVD* on the market - and seeing may be better than reading for a crafts you are unfamiliar with. 2: Go back to the Quilting Home Page here at Bella. The "Beginner Basics" section as well as others will be very helpful.

*There used to be a program on HGTV called "Simply Quilts" that covered all the basics - How to do sashing, - how to sew a Y seam, - how to choice batting, - etc. I hope some of these were complied for sale or show and are available somewhere.

One final suggestion would be to find a quild in your area. You should be able to ask for beginner information either from the group or from one of the individuals.

Hope you get some bit of help from my comments. GrannyH

I sat back too GrannyH, but here's my five cents worth. I think the BESTEST ALL TIME WONDERFUL MOST FANTASTIC beginners reference book is called "The Quilters' Companion". The ISBN no. is 1564770400. Is is the most comprehensive book for beginners and more advanced students alike. It covers subjects such as Rotary Cutting and the shortcuts to accuracy, Precise machine piecing, Applique both hand and machine; settings for your blocks, hand quilting techniques and finally finishing off your quilts with great edgings and binding. I refer to this book often during my research for this site. I'm so enthused after writing this, I'm going to do a book review for everyone. Hope this helps everyone. Cheerio for now

Hey Judie; I'm glad to get your recommendation as well. I learned to quilt at my grandmother's knee. But I didn't do anything until I helped my mother-in-law put together some blocks that her mother-in-law had embrodered. Now that my Granddaughter is asking me about sewing, etc, I should get this book so I'll have a better handle on the craft before I teach her. Wish we had something as cheerful to say in closing as Cheerio, but take care for now.

My mom recently got me started quilting and she bought me a book called Quilters Complete Guide by Marianne Fons & Liz Porter. It is wonderful and I happened to catch a show on PBS that they do every Saturday morning and that has helped a lot. I think they have videos on their website as well. My mom's biggest tip was to start with something small (like a throw) as that way you won't take forever to get it done. My first big quilt was an easy revised 9 patch pattern. I have also heard it called the disappearing 9 patch. I had not sewn in years and was not particularly fond of sewing, but have made blankets for grandchildren and friend's babies and was very surprised at how easy things are with the rotary cutters and the templates.

I highly recommend Quilt in a day Log Cabin pattern by Eleanor Burns. Any book by Eleanor is going to show you how to begin and give several color options. Nothing beats a hands on lesson from a local quilter, but Eleanor makes it easier without leaving out those "oops" steps. She's fun to watch on PBS Saturday mornings too.

Welcome to the world of quilting... it's very addictive.

I have watched her a couple of times and maybe it is just me but there is something about her voice that starts to get to me. So I can only watch her for so long. But that is okay, like you said she has books out. (-:
