How long have you been with your partner as a monogamous couple?

We have been living together for 12 years, we're about to hit year 13. I'm curious how long other people have been with their partner. Interestingly we aren't married because my boyfriend is too happy. He said he knows of many male friends who got married and who then broke up a year or two later, because the woman now suddenly wanted him acting differently "like a husband" rather than the way he had been all along.

I've definitely heard this from women too, that they'll say "Oh he'll be different once we're married".

We met as teenagers; over twenty-five years.

Our second anniversary was at the beginning of this month; we knew each other for 19 weeks before that. Yes weeks, not months.

Whoa, now that sounds like something worth discussing... Think I'll start a topic.

We have been together 19 years with no stopping us. We are not considered married in this state (no common law in WV of all places) but it makes no difference to us anyway.

Over 23 years...and counting!

And you're right, Lisa. Marriage does change people. Roles change, expectations change.

Both men and women change. For better and for worse. If we're honest about it, we act differently and treat our men differently when we're dating them vs. when we're married to them!

That will be an upcoming article on the Marriage site! smile
