Hello,
I'm having trouble with the instructions for a baby afghan. I can't figure out what it means, even though it seems very simple! I have the following:

Rnd 10: Ch 3, working in Back Loops Only, dc in next dc and in each dc around, working 3 dc in center dc of each corner; join with slip st to first dc, finish off: 120 dc.
Rnd 11: With right side facing and working in both loops, join Color D with slip st in first st; ch 1, sc in same st, ...

...and so on. My confusion is, what do the round 11 instructions mean by "first st???" I thought it meant the slip st used to join round 10, but then the following rows don't work out. Where else would the "first stitch" be?? I can post further instructions if necessary, but I think this may be enough to explain my problem.

Thanks so much for any help anyone can offer!!!

As for me, when I'm confused, I try one thing, if it doesn't work I'll try the other.
When changing colours the neatest way is to do like this.

When you're about to join rnd 10. Insert hook for the sl st, but instead of pulling upp the same colour, you finish the sl st with colour D.
Actually, as I read the instructions again, I think that's exactly what they mean (join color D with slip st in first st)

Did this make any sense to you?

Yes, it does make sense. :-) I tried it, and the pattern isn't working out. It's so frustrating because the other rounds & color changes have worked out just fine so far!

I missed that they want you to finish off after rnd 10.
Cut the yarn.
Rnd 10 is only dc's... (writing and thinking at the same time...)
I would try starting in the first st that has 2 loops.

If that doesn't work maybe you can write the complete instructions for rnd 11 so I can see what the pattern is.

Make sure you have counted all of your stitches correctly, when you slip stitched in the previous row that can look like it is a stitch when it isn't (hope that made sense) so make sure when you are starting Rnd 11 you are starting in the top of the previous rows (Rnd 10) ch 3 **remember a ch 3 at a beginning of a row counts as your FIRST dc** that is where you do a sl st to get started, then ch 1 and sc in that same exact spot, meaning the same place you did your sl st. Hope this helps.

I wanted to tell everyone thanks for their help! I really appreciate it! After some trial and error, I figured out where I went wrong. It actually wasn't in the set of instructions I posted, but further on down the line (where I thought I knew exactly what they were talking about)! I've learned to post everything next time. Thanks again for your time!!

The first stitch is the one after you finish round 10. You can mark each round with a marker or a safety pin or paper clip to keep track of your beginnings.
