We have had that experience although not as dramatic as your drop in. One way to prevent something like that is to put down plyboard as flooring once you have your insulation in place. Then you can navigate better and you can store items more safely. Of course, storing items in the attic should be done with thoughtful consideration. (HA to that one! says me.)

I agree, plywood or any wood flooring solves the 'dropping in' issue, although it does compromise the insulation quality a bit. But, to get useful storage in an attic, you'd have to put some type of flooring down, and I agree totally with that.
