The most obvious choices for fuel-efficient vehicles are hybrids. Hybrids use a gasoline engine as their main power source, and they also have an electric motor for additional energy. The electric motor assists the gas engine during acceleration, instantly starts the gas engine at stoplights, and charges the batteries while decelerating and braking.

Right now (especially with gas at $2 a gallon again!) I think hybrids are still a bit of a "novelty" - for lack of a better term. I think we are at least 5 years away from having hybrids readily available, and generally within the reach of the majority of drivers.

I have a Toyota Camry hybrid, and the display says it only gets 22.5 (that is city driving). I think this may be a little inaccurate since I hardly ever have to fill it up, but who knows.

For a little larger car, the new Kia Soul seems to get pretty good mileage-- an estimated 30 mpg. Has anyone seen it yet? I like the look of it.

I have a 2009 Pontiac Vibe - not a hybrid. I get 31 HWY and 29 city.

Thats good-- that is a sedan right? For its slightly larger size the Soul is doing pretty good with 30 mpg...I just wish my car got that!
