I am a VERY new quilter; this is actually my first project.
My oldest Son and his wife are having their first baby. I came across a bedspread that my Mother had made for my son when he was a baby (25 years ago)
I got the bright idea to make a quilt out of it for the baby.
I brought fabric, cut out squares, even got them all sewn together, and it looks very nice (if I may say myself) smile
Here's my problem, I am stuck on how to do the back. (And I won't even mention the anxiety I have thinking about the border...Baby steps Judy, baby steps!) I bought a really nice flannel so that it would add some "softness".
The quilt is approx. 60 in. I bought 4 yards of the flannel. It, of course is not wide enough. Do I just cut it in half and sew it together?
I hope that doesn't sound as dumb to all of you as it does to me.
I appreciate any help you can give me.

THANK YOU!!

Hi Judy, I think your quilt sounds nice, I have used flannel for my baby quilts also. I would cut your backing so that it had some sort of arrangment of shapes as well, since it is probably 45 inches wide. Maybe the width of fabric in the center and two boarders all the way around, each in a color from the front. You can adjust the boarders to the size of the squares on the top side so that when it is together you quilt through in the seem. keep on stitching, the sheep lady

Has anyone ever made a quilt with fleece on one side and cotton on the other?

Thanks!

Hi Judy, I'm the Quilting Editor for BellaOnline. I've made several quilts with fleece on one side and cotton on the other. I find these are very good quilts for new-born babies as they are much softer with the fleece on the underside. They wash very well and I'm usually able to use some co-ordinating fabric so the quilt looks nice as well. I tend to use a very fine batting as you really want these quilts pliable enough to wrap around a baby bundle. Let me know how you get on.
Cheerio for now

i have a different quilt question. hope you can help (sure you can).

when i cut hst to produce a s, even though i am very careful about my 1/4" seams, the s is not always large enough. it must be in the rotary cutting. soo,
how can i figure out how much bigger to cut the hst. should i simply increase the size by one seam allowance worth? i know there's a formula. i can square them up after sewing. also, can they be cut so that the bias is not on the long seam? would that help?

butterflywing, if you go to the BellaOnline Quilting Website under the Topic of TIPS AND TRICKS you will find an Article 'Half Square Triangles Made Easy'. The article shows four (4) methods you can use for making Half Square Triangles. The method I use and reccommend is Method 2: Sew than Cut. This method keeps the bias from stretching out of shape. Seems to me that no matter where the bias is, it should be sewn before it gets cut.

One Granny's opinion.

Granny, I never thought about that. I think I will change my method of hsts. It seems even when I do the whole inch instead of 7/8ths I have a problem. Good thinking!
