Does anyone know of a good source for wood birdhouse kits (or bird feeder kits)? There are a couple on Oriental Trading but a reviewer said they were too hard to assemble to use with kids.
Thanks!

When my husband and I were at our Boy Scout store not too long ago, we saw some birdhouse kits. At least one of the kits is one that requires using tools.
There are some bird houses at scoutstuff.org (click on "Crafts," then click on "Wood"). I can't tell which require the use of tools and which ones don't, though. If you have a Boy Scout Store you can get to, I would recommend going there and looking at the birdhouses in person.

If you are looking at Wolf requirement 5E, it does not have to be a birdhouse. It can be anything useful.
Both Home Depot and Lowe's have kid's workshops each month - for FREE. They are usually the first or second Saturday of the month.
There are many basic birdhouse plans on the internet if you want to build your own. See if your den families can provide scrap lumber, and other materials. A few dads to help with the hammering is good too!
If you want to make a cheap bird feeder, the cheapest, and easiest, it the pine cone bird feeder. You can collect pine cones by simply walking around town! Then tie on a string hanger, cover them in peanut butter and birdseed, and you are ready to go.
Here is another easy bird feeder from Boy's Life - BellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. If you don't know how to do UBB code just post here for help - we will help out!

I was happy to see you mention the workshops at Home Dept and Lowe's. My son will be going to a workshop at a Home Depot this Saturday, and he will be making bookends (to fulfill Wolf requirement 5E).

Depending on the store manager at your local Home Depot (which carries a bird house kit for their wworkshops), you might also be able to get them to hold a special workshop just for your den. Some have also contributed the kits to the den.
Again, depending on the store manager, I believe you might be able to get Lowes to do the same.
It is definately worth a phone call.

My son got to go the workshop at Home Depot today, and he had a great time. In fact, he had such a good time that he wants to go back and do the workshop next month. This month, they had a kit to make simple football helmet shaped bookends. And while they were at Home Depot, my husband and son looked at the various tools and talked about what they did (to satsify Achievement #5a).

To fulfill 5e, my son's wolf den made the can crusher from an issue of Boy's Life. It fit well with the recycling presentation we had the week before.
