I have a filet crochet pattern a deer scene from from Crochet Fantasy Vol 3 Number 8 Dec 1984. The directions are very brief "Chain 262. Begin wigth the b ottom of gthe design for A-A1, according to the diagram, Crochet the 1st dc in the 4th chain form the hook. turn with chain 3. The stich is the usual filet blocks and spaces. My problem is that I do have the correct amount of stiches, but cannot get the blocks and stitches to work out. If the pic has 17 blocks I might have 25 blocks to complete. Should I just follow the pattern exactly as drawn and hope for the best. I usually count but it doesnt seem to work with this . Thanks for any help!

There is a formula to determine the correct number for your starting chain and it depends on several factors. I am going to assume here that the patterns calls for 4dc per mesh and that it begins with a solid block. Count all the blocks on the bottom of the pattern (include all open and closed) and your formula would be: number of blocks on the first row X 3 = number + 4 = number to chain for beginning.

Just remember sometimes the magazine do make little mistakes, it happens.
