I think the most frustrating thing about an old friend being a new mom is how difficult it is to get her full attention. Here is an example of talking to her on the phone-

Me- "So, I am bringing the cake and I will be buying purple decorations. Do you think you can pick up some balloons?"

She- "Purple? Sure- HAYLEY STOP PUTTING SOCKS IN THE FISHTANK!!!!! purple seems good because Hayley, do you have to go potty? Hayyyyleeeeyy, you look like you have to go potty! You know, Hayley went poopoo in the potty yesterday!"

Me- "Wow!"

I am with ya. I have a very hard time still being friends with new mommies. In many cases, it just doesn't work out. frown

the most frustrating thing for me is it's ALL she talks about and she complains constantly about her husband not helping her, how tired she is, how she never has any free time for herself anymore, blah blah blah. i want to say to her - "hello! what did you think having a baby would be like?" and then i think to myself I LOVE MY LIFE!!!

I tell people I have reached my baby critical mass and they have to move along to non-baby topics. No one seems to mind.

I think what annoys me most about new moms is their need for sympathy. I'm sure that not all new moms are like this, but it seems like every new mom that I know whines about how hard it is (I never get any sleep, it's so hard to run errands with a child, I have so little opportunity for adult conversation, etc.) and expects everyone to fawn all over them for it. You wanted a baby so badly, and you made this choice. Now I am supposed to feel sorry for you?

You are absolutely right, that happens all of the time! I like to think that they finally realized what it is that they got themselves into.

Without a doubt, the most annoying thing for me is when new mommies (or daddies) say, "Having children really gives you a whole new perspective on life. It really makes you [FILL IN BLANK WITH A) UNDERSTAND THE BEAUTY AND WONDER OF LIFE B) TRULY SEE HOW DANGEROUS AND SCARY THE WORLD IS AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO FIX IT FOR THE FUTURE OF "THE CHILDREN" C) HOW EVERYTHING THAT CAME BEFORE IN MY LIFE JUST SEEMS SO UNIMPORTANT AND SHALLOW COMPARED TO THE IMPORTANT JOB OF PARENTHOOD D) ANY OTHER DIME-STORE OPRAH-STYLE CLICHED PSYCHOBABBLE PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE YOU CAN IMAGINE...SOME NEW PARENT HAS SAID IT!
I think that during the labor process all the oxytocin running through the system turns on a switch with some people where suddenly they think they are a sage, brimming forth with mystical wisdom and the secrets of life. Apparently, new Dads also have oxytocin released, so that explains their newfound depth as well.

I get all spiritual about the wonder of life via nature myself. Maybe that is why my mommy gene never kicked in.
