The big three are hurting because they thought that big gas-guzzling (and even the hybrid larger vehicles suck it down pretty good) was the way to go -- and then we had that huge jump in gas prices.
If they were smart, they would have been retooling ages ago for truly fuel efficient vehicles. Granted, gas prices have dropped (because driving dropped)... but at the moment, everyone is still afraid to drive much, because of fear of the economy, having the gas price go back up, etc. I suspect that the only companies that have a decent shot at being successful are ones that have developed better economies.
