Although gas prices have come down quite a bit, everyone is looking to save money in these economic times. Hybrids offer greater savings in the long run. But a non-hybrid, used car would costs much less money up front. So, do you plan to purchase a hybrid for your next vehicle to get the greater gas mileage?

We DID purchase a hybrid, in July. We're hoping for our NEXT vehicle (which is years away -- the truck is still in great shape) to be even better than the Prius. Even with gas prices lower -- and if people don't keep to their more economical driving practices, I suspect they will bounce back up -- it is nice to know that I am not polluting as much. Nor using up a finite resource.

I wouldn't mind owning a hybrid vehicle to test them out. I don't hear that many bad things about hybrid cars. The end of the year is coming and I'm quite sure car dealers will have some good sales going on to clear the lot for the next batch of cars. I heard Chrysler actually pulled two of their new hybrid trucks because SUV sales are down.

The big three are hurting because they thought that big gas-guzzling (and even the hybrid larger vehicles suck it down pretty good) was the way to go -- and then we had that huge jump in gas prices.

If they were smart, they would have been retooling ages ago for truly fuel efficient vehicles. Granted, gas prices have dropped (because driving dropped)... but at the moment, everyone is still afraid to drive much, because of fear of the economy, having the gas price go back up, etc. I suspect that the only companies that have a decent shot at being successful are ones that have developed better economies.

A hybrid engine gets significantly better gas mileage than a conventional gas engine. Hybrids consume less gas and produce less pollution per mile than conventional gasoline engines. The hybrid engine currently sold in the Honda Civic Hybrid gets 10 to 15 miles more per gallon than a regular gas engine in the same car.

I think as hybrid vehicles become cheaper and more varied, their popularity will increase. I currently have a Honda CRV and I will pay it off next year. I plan to hold on to it at least for a couple years beyond that. At that time, if I can get a CRV as a hybrid, thats probably what I'll get!
