I agree with poisonivy. I think pulling up behind them is the proper way to approach. A wave or a nod is okay but chatting is too weird.

I made the decision to get back into riding. I bought a bike. I even got a learner's permit so I could ride the bike before the Motorcycle Rider's Course began. And finally, I attended the MRC in Chesapeake. "DW" and "SIM" did a great job of emphasizing the hazards of bike riding and the responsibility each rider has for themselves, the riding conditions, and those things out there called "cars". Shortly after completing the course and riding for several weeks, I realized the MRC had left out an essential element of motorcycle riding - Motorcycle Etiquette.

If the rider is in the left of the lane , I stagger on the right so I can be seen in their mirror, then nod and wait for the light to change. But I will speak if they speak.

I would just say yes or no or simply nod my head. I won't chat with a stranger.

You don't want to start a conversation...definetly an accident waiting to happen! Most people don't really want someone pulling up beside them. Staggered! In my experience, you only pull up next to someone you know.

One answer to your question is: I will stay behind this person in a staggered formation. 1. Because I do not know this other person. 2. I do not know his or her intensions are they looking for something, or someone, etc:, 3. Because a staggared formation allows the motorcyclist and the public to clearly see each other better. smile
