I spent a lovely Saturday afternoon this past weekend, cleaning the kitchen and cooking and baking a big fresh apple pie, and watching Saving Sarah Cain DVD. Like I said in my review of this film this morning, it takes a lot to make me cry over a movie, but this one did. So did Bridge to Terabithia .

My daughter and I like to watch movies that make us cry; it's therapeutic sometimes. The one we both admit to, no matter how many times we watch it, is Steel Magnolias . Before that, it was Terms of Endearment. Yes, we both like Shirley McClain.

What movies make you cry? Don't you think it's good sometimes?

"On Golden Pond" made me cry because it seemed like nothing the daughter (Jane Fonda) did was good enough for her Dad (real life actor (Peter Fonda). The story seemed so true to life and for me it seemed to ring true of my own story. I felt like I spent my whole like trying to please my father then I married a man he didn't approve of and he in his own secret way 27 years later, still reserves a certain amount of rejection just for me. Yeah I cry like a baby when I watch that movie and listen to Jane argue with her father about not doing anything right in his eyes.

I haven't seen it for a long time but I remember the emotions.

So many of them do! I'm so emotional. But since I just saw The Notebook, I'll say that one.

A few movies that make me cry, or at least get really choked up are:

1. The Goodbye Girl (1977) w/ Richard Dreyfuss & Marsha Mason
2. Murphy's Romance (1985) w/ James Garner & Sally Fields
3. Dave (1993) w/ Kevin Kline
4. Little Man Tate (1991) w/ Jodie Foster
5. Mr. Holland's Opus (1995) w/ Richard Dreyfuss
6. Phenomenom (1996) w/ John Travolta

Oh, I remember On Golden Pond. Yes, that is a good cryer too. Like you, if a movie reminds me of something in my own life, it gets to me. I think that's why the two Shirley McClain's make me cry because I have a daughter who has been sick so much of her life. It tears me apart to think I could lose her Sally Field did in Steel Magnolias.

Do you feel better after a good cry?

Of course. The original tear jerker of all time. I might have to find that one and watch it again.
