A friend of mine who has had bettas for a couple of years now says that bubble nests are a sign of a happy healthy fish. If that is true then Mr Finnicky is in fact a very happy camper!!!! I was so happy to see him swimming and flaring, nice color and a wonderful bubble nest all built. First one of any size he has made in the 8 days or so I have had him, he spit a couple of bubbles around the sides occasionally before I saw the ick, and has spit a few the last couple of days as he seemed to be feeling better, but this one is the "Real Thing!!!" Thanks for all your help and encouragement first with the lack of eating and then the battle with the ick. He is on day 3 soon to be 4 of the betta fix now, guess I should continue to add it the full 7 days I don't want any secondary infections springing up here, but he seems great now!!!

Glad to hear it! Yes, that is one sign of a happy betta fishie. And I think Emg's bettas need to have a talk with yours about building these bubblenests.

Haha..Jilly, you're not kidding!!

And it's not like these are unhealthy fish either....they live on fresh live brine shrimp, fruitflies, that yucky bloodworm in gel stuff and bio betta gold pellets. They have temps in the high 70's and nice pretty clean tanks to swim in!! So...I don't know what they're problem is! fussy fish oO(maybe they're just plain spoiled?)

Ooooh. That would explain why instead of just a few bubbles here and there, I found a huge pile of them today. I guess that was Alpha's way of saying, "Fantabulous tank, you rock my world, Mommyperson." Good to have his sticky stamp of approval. =D

Hmmm, Emg my Pinky is not doing a bubble nest now that he's home with our soft water. I'm not sure if it's cause he's a sad guy or the water.

He and Sweetie may need a chance to tango again. Sweetie's getting plumped up. Must get tank heaters!

Nann

I have read at other sites that soft water is supposed to be good for building bubblenests! I don't have a clue why mine don't but it would have to have something to do with the water conditions. They are very healthy, have nice clean tanks and seem very happy.

My water does test "very soft" on one of those dipstick testers..right now that is all I use. Maybe there is a limit to how soft it should be ?

Don't know, but my steel pair did fine spawning and I have lots of fry to take care of..(and find homes for! eek ) I have another 10 gallon..a gift from a generous friend and I am getting ready to set it up to perhaps try my blue marble with...ah..um...don't know yet! It'll be one of those last minute "eenie meenie minee moe" decisions I think. I'm conditioning them both up along with Jax.

Emg  fish

Emg,
I don't think Pinky is too happy with his new surroundings. He doesn't get nearly as much attention as he used to, and Sweetie has a yucky brown algae bloom on the side of her tank nearest to him.

I think I'm going to take Jilly's advice and look for a couple of oto's to add to the tank. I hope that will help. And I have got to get a heater. The temp fluctuates a lot more at home than the office.

the brown algae is diatoms, bit that's very easy to get off. use as clean cotton swab or cotton ball - should come right off. make sure your hands are clean, o' course...

fish So that is what the bubble thing is about. Glad to know that is a good sign, did not know! My fish must be pretty happy. Those bubbles is one reason I named my fish Bubbles.
