Jilly,
Hey Jilly! I have to ask you about these "betta vases". When I first heard about what they do to bettas online, It made me really mad , ( but not as mad as it made me when I first heard about making betta's fight ) but, someone told me that, maybe, it's not as bad as some say, and that some bettas might be able to survive them eek .(WOW) Meanwhile, since then, I've been a little...well...... confused . And I've been wondering, is it really THAT bad?

Hi Kiddo. I wrote this article about betta vases:

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art17013.asp

It CAN be done correctly, but it's just a lot nicer to put a real aquatic plant in the bottom and skip the peace lily, since all the work trimming the roots and taking the plant out for feedings gets old.

Jilly,
Thanks for the info! It seems a lot of work just to keep a lily and betta together  . Shame some people keep them in those deathtraps . One time I saw a woman buy all these bettas, including one of the most beautiful bettas I ever saw! It was a opol male, unbelivingly pretty, with big, bright fins and everything. And you know what she said at the check out counter? She said she was going to put him (and the others) in betta vases! It made me so mad!!! Sure hope he found a good home. He's just to beautiful to die!!

Whenever I'm in the pet store and I see people looking at bettas, I always strike up a conversation. I don't know, maybe I'm just desperate for betta friendly company. I always try to share a little bit of my knowledge with other people who are thinking about buying bettas. If I were you, I'd have been like, "I couldn't help but overhear, you're trying to make a carnivore eat what?" haha

Haha..!

I do the same exact thing! I think PetCo should pay me to hang around thier store...I sell more stuff for them than they'll ever know!

A lady was in buying a betta for her grandaughter. So...I told her about the bettascene(though, I did also tell her she could get it way cheaper at walmart  ) Showed her what food to get for them, how to fix fix the water all up so she also bought some aquarium salt AND water conditioner/stresscoat. And to think..she just would have walked out with a $2.oo fish. and tiny bettabowl.

Your right Jilly...my good deed for the day!

Tamagot,
I wish I did that. Except I'm a'little...well...sortof.....um....shy . One time I saw a family (two kids and a dad) Go out and get two bettas....and they JUST got a bowl, no conditioner or anything. Not only that, but they were going to put the two males in the SAME BOWL eek !!!!!!!!! I could of said something then...but NOOOOO, I was to shy!!!!! I'm not mad at them, they obviosly didn't know anything about bettas. (instead, I'm sort of mad at myself ) But that's NOT going to happen again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I hope)

Oh, I'm the exact opposite. I'm really loud and sometimes downright rude, haha. If we get bad service in a restaurant, my friends always make me talk to the waitress or whoever else. When we found moldy bread at Walgreens, once again, I'm pushed to the front, 'cause they know I'll do it. Which is weird, because I hate nothing in the wide world more than calling a place to order pizza!

But yeah, if maybe I haven't saved a betta's life, I think I saved the lives of some other fish - a woman was looking at bettas and considering putting them in the tank she was rebuilding. When I saw her walk out, she had only a few small fish. They probably would have been snackies if I hadn't talked to her about bettas. Whew. I'm not going to hold their species against them. =) I'm sure they put in to be betta, but not all fish can make the cut!

tamagot,
LOL !!!!!!! Poor you! I'm usually a person who pushes the people up  ! Next time I see betta going to a home, I'll try harder to tell them a thing or too. But...I don't know WHY anybody would WANT to make bettas fight !(not including the kids and dad, they just didn't know any better  )

Don't they breed bettas to fight in Thailand? I personally think it's incredibly cruel. =/ I like my betta with all of his pretty little fins intact, thank you. But it's common to see that kind of thing in some countries, people betting on animal fights. Why can't they just watch bad reality TV like everybody else?
