What ideas have you tried to help you fall asleep at night?

A hot cup of tea always helps me fall asleep. Chamomile tea is supposed to be especially good for helping you fall asleep, but I find that any decaffeinated tea does the trick.

I love the idea of using soft music. I used to own one of those sound machines and used the nature sounds to help me fall asleep. Researchers say that visualizing helps you fall asleep since it taxes your mind. I find that nature sounds help me visualize.

I am a chronic insomniac, and am treated for it by my psychiatrist - so do take meds.

But I do love listening to very soft music, so soft that you can barely hear it.

The very best thing about the TV we bought last year is that it has a sleep timer on it. We get XM radio stations on it through our satellite TV, and one of the stations is called "Audio VIsion" - it is a combination of world music and nature sounds. I turn that down very low, and set the timer to turn the tv off in about 2 hours.

That way it helps me get to sleep, and I don't waste electricity all night long either.

I wake often during the night, and if left to itself my brain starts thinking and planning and sleep vanishes. Music doesn't work, because I LISTEN to it, and reading is out because I get involved in the story and hours pass before sleep comes again. My cure is the BBC World Service that is on my local NPR station from midnight to 5 am. There's something about those soothing British voices that puts me right back to sleep, even if I want to hear what they are saying.
So every year when I renew my membership in the station I tell them that the BBC is my favorite program, but I don't tell them why!

In the last year I've added a Conair sound machine to my bedtime routine. I always set it to the ocean wave setting. After I turn off the lights the sound of the ocean waves makes me feel likes I'm really sleeping on an ocean beach and it's very hypnotic and peaceful. I've gotten so used to it now that if I've forgotten to turn it on I literally cannot fall asleep at all, even with the help of my sleeping pills.

I was a great sleeper until I started having children in 1998. However, that's when I discovered that the tricks used to get babies to sleep work well with me. Having a routine, quieting things down etc.

The key for me is timing. If I go to bed too early I'll wake up in the middle of the night. I can't go to bed before say 9:30. 10-11 seems to be the magic number.
