In countries like India, most children, maybe a boy or a girl, will get their ears pierced in religious ceremony before they are about 5 years old. Even a child at the youngest stage of life may get their ears pierced as early as several days after their birth.

In Islamic religion only the females can get their ear pierced. According to them if a male pierces his ear it represents 'looking like women" act according to many Muslims traditions over history. Taking it from that point of view many Muslim cultures considered it Haram.

I think nationalities also get pierced at an early age not just for religious reasons. I am an Italian Catholic and my baby girl had her ears pierced in the doctors office when she was receiving her booster shots. She was just four months old. To us it is anadornment, and the girl will always have them and she will not have to contend with any pain(unless she pierces them again on her own).

According to me wearing earrings is completely a personal choice in America but in some countries it is somewhat customary to wear them For Eg In some tribes in Africa , women have the to wear a huge earring and the bigger the earring the better the respect among other tribeswomen.
