When my son was about 12, he had a new friend who moved into the neighborhood. The friend had a beautiful German Shepherd. The dog's name was (my phoenetic spelling) Diojii and was pronounced as "Dee-oh-gee". All of us mothers used to get together for coffee once in awhile and one conversation that always came up was: "Where did they get that dog's name from?" "What nationality is it?" "How is it spelled?" "It is such an exotic name for a dog, but pretty!" Finally, we asked the boy about his dog's name, how is it spelled and what does it mean? The boy looked very bewildered and said, "It is spelled D-O-G, and it means dog."

He must have thought we were all idiots!

Do you have an unusual name for your dog?

OMG I had one named DOG as well ;0)

It was because my sister had learned how to spell the word dog and when we got the dog and needed to come up with a name she said Deeohgee.. and we just named it that!

We had a dog my entire childhood - he lived to be 20. I can't even say how young I was when we got him, but I was a toddler who couldn't say much beside 'puppy'. When that dog got old, could hardly walk and didn't see much beyond his nose, he was still called 'Puppy'.

My grandson named his dog 'Buster'. I am usually the one who takes him out for his long walks and everyone thinks he is a girl dog because he is so pretty with long white hair and black markings. He really seems to get embarrassed when someone says, "Oh, she's so pretty!" One little toddler down the way calls our dog "Woo Woo" - (?! I guess that is for woof woof.)

My son has a Shih Tzu he looks like a little dry mop, his name is MACK. He got his name from my son using the first letter of his family's names Mark, Alexis, Cathy, Kathy

Our beagle is named Baxter. Baxter Newton Tailor. My boyfriend just liked the name Baxter! 'Newton' is because he gives all his pets a 'cookie' middle name. Tailor is because of 'tail'.

I had a dog named Maizey. She might have been a peekapoo- she was a stray so I don't know for sure. Like Rosie said, she looked like a little dry mop.

I picked the name because she reminded me of a little floozy.
