The price of plastics has risen so fast that the plastic yoghurt pots we buy from the supermarket will soon be worth more than their contents. All over US and UK companies are looking at ways of mining for plastics in old dump. New news item .

New story!

Apparently the city of Seattle is implementing a new tax which will require drug, grocery, and convenience stores to charge $.20 for each plastic bag given to a customer. The new law is meant to encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags to the store. I guess if the citizens voted in favor of this new tax then it is fine, but the article I read didn't say the tax was actually put to a vote.

Just curious, how many of you take your own reusable bags to the store? I rarely see anyone do this at the stores I frequent.

i use the recycled woven plastic bags (or ecofabric) to the stores. I keep some stored in my car at all times so that I can have them for those "non-planned" trips on the way home to the store. One grocery store give us a 5 or 10 cent discount (depending on the sliding daily scale) on each item purchased if you bring in your own recycled plastic bags, but only a 10 cent total discount if you bring in the plastic bags they give you (the think ones seen floating about everywhere). They have bins for you to drop of your old plastic bags and they take those to be turned into the eco fabric bags they sell and encourage you to use.

Jase, I like your idea of using the ecofabric bags. I have resisted buying the store's reusable bags because I don't want to pay to advertise for the store; however, it would be so easy to make a similar bag. I just may need to dust off my sewing machine and put it to good use. smile
