The head honcho here is having wisdom teeth pulled - and that got me wondering why certain phrases have stayed in our lexicon, and why they are called what they are called - so pitch in and give us some you have been wondering about, OR give us answers if you know them!

Wisdom teeth?

A Wake? (as in funeral get together)

A Bullpen? (baseball)

Chicken Pox?

Why do they call it a Birdie? (golf term)

The word "wake" for an Irish death ceremony originated from an ancient Indo-European word "wog" - meaning to watch or guard. It is held in the house of the deceased with the body present. In this way, the family and friends are there to stand guard and watch over the departed until the soul can find it's way to heaven without evil spirits misguiding it.

"Wisdom teeth"? Now that has always puzzled me! Why are they called that if they are the teeth that cause the worst pain?

How about "pot holes" in the street?

"Black Friday"? If you look back in history, a lot of devastating things happened on Fridays. The stock market crash, the womens political failure outside the British House of Commons, devastating fires in Australia, etc. see:

I also know that Friday the 13th as a "bad day" came about because Friday October 13th, 1307 was the day the Pope, bless his heart, and the King of France (ditto) destroyed the Templars.
So many things wrapped up in the past - and with the Church!
