I am wondering if there are places you have been where you would consider retiring? While I have certainly not been to every place on the globe, there were places I have been where I thought I might want to retire someday. How about you?

I would like to retire in the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York. A little land and a comfortable cabin with the woods around me and a lake in front of me.

New York sounds great - but the mountains? Arent they kind of difficult for seniors maybe - also wouldn't you miss the ocean? Maybe half way between the two would be just perfect? Always wanted to visit New York on a cruise ship. (Dont like aeroplanes lol.)

No, I won't miss the ocean. I live inland anyway. I used to live in Florida and hated it. The ocean is nice but then you have tropical storms and hurricanes to worry about. I love the snow so the mountains are perfect.

Besides that, the Adirondack Mountains are beautiful and there are parts you can live in where it doesn't seem like mountains as opposed to living in the Rockies or something.

The Adirondacks

I have lived by the ocean and currently live in the mountains. I would actually consider moving back to my native Ohio in my old age. Parts of the southeast are really beautiful and very reasonably priced as well.

Hi!
I see from your tag that currently you are in Jackson. I went through there a couple of years ago - 2006 - on the way to Tetons and Yellowstone. It is very pretty there. 4 seasons, lots of outdoor recreation, around 10,000 people. Is the cost of living there higher than Rock Springs or Green River?

I currently live in the Blue Ridge Mtns of North Carolina. I can't imagine ever leaving this paradise! Apparently lots of others feel the same way, because we have lots of people coming here to retire or just to start a new life. Weather is relatively mild, scenery lovely, etc. So for me, retiring.... I think I will just stay here!

Hi Jim,

Sorry for the delay in answering your question; I've been out of town recently!

Jackson is expensive, although the market has actually been a bit softer in the last few months than normal. A condo will run you a minimum of $300k; a single family home at least $600k. Here is a website updated daily with listings in Teton county

Are you looking to retire in Jackson?

The Columbia River Gorge in Oregon where I can see the train tracks on either side. The river is beautiful and the trains are fun to watch. Sigh!
