The first thing to remember is that oriental rugs are made of wool, and thus any cleaning needs to be compatible with this fibre. Water is good, rubbing is not good. Thus soaking and absorbing water may help for some stains. A touch of vinegar in the final rinse will help in colour stabilization and color vibrancy. Make sure the rug is clean; otherwise rings will form.
The second thing is the nature of the stain. If a chemical is needed to dissolve the stain, ensure that it is compatible with the wool fibre.
Hoping this helps.
