I have to agree with skyhaven on this one -- nightgowns bunch up too much for me to feel comfortable in them. They're very pretty, though.

I tend not to move around much once I am bed. I'm asleep within a few minutes and move only once or twice.

I love nice nightgowns too. You are right, they seem to either be very skimpy or granny gowns now. I don't care if they twist while I'm sleeping, I feel good in them.

Speaking of the black lace nightie that Lisa gave us a link for that is a 1940s style, I once bought a beautiful gown at a yard sale for 50 cents. The woman who sold it to me said it belonged to her grandmother. It was just georgeous, a pale pink nylon with lots of shirring at the bodice. I don't know how she could have given it up!
Moe: The gowns you are wearing in the photo are similar to the pattern that I've used to make my own nighties. The only difference is that I run elastic beneath the bustline to give it some shape. The pattern is very easy to sew. You all look pretty in that picture!

As I sleep naked, you'd think that I wouldn't have an opinion on this...
However, I love nightgowns! I make my own - and they;re not hard at all! My nightgowns are basically 2 lengths of fabric sewn together, and then with a ribbon threaded through the top and back to gatther the neckline and make the straps.
But I also love the 1930'2 and 40's glamourous ones as well!
I tend to wear nightgowns more as lounging wear - I come home from work and shower and change from my work clothes into a nightgown.
But then - I've been told I'm extremely girly-girly!

I love the soft, feminine cotton gowns with dainty ribbons and eyelets. Lace is scratchy. If you sew, it is well worth making your own gowns.

Most lace is scratchy. I find I don't mind that stretch lace. I don't know how better to describe it. It's just really soft. But I know about that scratchy stuff you're talking about.

I agree that lace can be scratchy.
My favorite material for winter nightgowns is flannel-backed satin -- the washable type. It's warm on the inside and satiny on the outside. I have found it at fabric stores.
For me, regular flannel is a bit stiff and heavy. And I don't care for that flame-retardant stuff -- it doesn't wear well and it looks cheap to me.
For warmer weather, I actually prefer polyester or a cotton-poly blend. I have been disillusioned with cotton gowns -- they fade, stain, shrink and wrinkle. I have always been a fan of polyester; after all, it was created as an improvement over natural fibers.

While we're talking about flannel PJs, I am wearing my polar bear ones right now and they seem to have shrunk. Was I supposed to wash them a certain way to keep them from shrinking? This is really annoying, I liked these and had to search to find them ...
