I recently posted an article about how dating might be defined. Dating Defined

As I explained in my article, I think of dating as the process by which two people who are attracted to each other get better acquainted, though the details of that process vary from person to person.

I'd love to hear some of the different ways in which people define dating.

What does dating mean to you? Has your definition of dating changed over the years and if so, how and why did it change?

This is gonna sound nuts but I think of dating as kind of like window shopping for someone who'll inspire you to make a real investment.

*For the record I'm happy with my investment but just hope my cousin can finally come across the window with the right guy in it already! If your out there know that she's looking for you!

Brindabear, I love that summation of dating - I believe that is exactly what most people are doing.

There are some out there that just like to go on dates for fun and are not looking for a long term relationship, but I think those are not quite as common.

But that is one of the major points of Kristina's article - that you need to get it out up front what you are looking for from the relationship. Maybe not necesarily say "I'm trying to decide if I want you to be my husband" , but more along the lines of- "I'm not interested in one-night stands".

Hmmmm......I define dating as that stage of "hanging out" where you have not yet made up your mind that that person is THE ONE. Dating can be exclusive or not. Once you (both) clearly know that the person is the one for you, then it's no longer dating.

Throughout your relationship, you are always allowed to act like you are dating though. Spices things up....

Pardon the sarcasm....BUT....

Dating is what men do before they get into your pants, once they have you, they sleep on your couch while you cook for them.

In a related matter, WHEN is a good time to bring up defining the relationship? Before you get intimate? After you have been intimate? On the "Xth" date? What have your experiences been with this? I am in a relatively new relationship now (NOT with the complete JERK I posted about a couple months ago!) with an exceptionally nice guy. We met just prior to Christmas, and see each other regularly at least once a week. I don't want to scare him away by asking this question too soon...what do you guys think? It's been about a month since we started seeing each other, and the "are we dating/exclusive" topic hasn't come up on it's own... Thanks!

Museumgirl- I would wait for the guy to bring it up. However you can put the thought into his head- lol- just make him think it was his idea.
