OK, my mom was just told she has sky high cholesterol. It was quite a shock to all of us.

I have been doing some research to help her out -- she doesn't have internet access, which really limits her information! I have been poring over the American Heart Association site, and I am having several brochures mailed to her. All for free.

A friend told me that eating walnuts will help with cholesterol. What other foods will help raise her "good" cholesterol and lower her "bad" cholesterol?

She is very overwhelmed with all of the dietary restrictions so I thought it might be helpful for me to share some things she SHOULD eat (a postive, rather than a negative). She is built small, like me, so she has never been on a "diet" of any kind in her entire life!

I'm just trying to make this easier for her by providing her with additional information. I don't think her doctor is doing a very good job. They gave her these dietary guidelines and then they don't want to see her again until OCTOBER! Considering her levels were "off the charts," I thought they would want to check in with her sooner than that.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Kim

That happened to me this year too. The doctor put me on meds but he suggested I take omega-3 gel tabs up to 4000 mg a day. I'll let you know how my good cholesterol is doing when I return for blood work in five months. Once he put me on the meds, there was a huge drop in my count of over 100 points. My HDL dropped too that is why he put me on the fish oil tabs.

He gave me a sheet with what is good to eat rather than what is bad and should be eliminated from my diet.

Hi, Kim
What do you think your Mom is willing to do?
My husband had high choestrol. We've got it down in 4 months.
Avoiding red meat( 2-3 time a month), dairy. He eats chicken or fish + large salad or soup and salad. Also if you have high fat in a blood you need a lots of fiber to cleanse blood and colon. We found a nutritional product with 24 grams of fiber in it. It is a shake, he drinks it twice a day, morning - as a breakfast, and second before dinner.
Drinks about 80oz of water a day.
he also lost about 20 lb, feels great in his 52 and excercises 3 times a week.
It's all depends on yur Mom desire.
Is she really wants to feel better and live healthy long life?

I'm not sure what she is willing to do. She only weighs about 110 pounds now, so losing weight isn't a motivator -- hopefully getting healthy will be!

I've heard fish oil capsules will help too. She already doesn't eat much red meat -- but she does eat a lot of dairy. So she could cut back there. She likes salads, so that's a good thing.

I hadn't seen anything about fiber yet. I will pass that on.

She could use some more exercise, but so could I!!

How many points was your husband able to drop?

Thanks!
Kim

Tell her to add cinnamon to her diet. Just 1/4 tsp per day will get her cholesterol down. My husband's dropped 40 points in just 5 months.

My parents, who have both had high cholesterol for many years tried this too and theirs went down about the same amount. My mom's cholesterol was under 200 for the first time in about 40 years using only cinnamon.

You can get capsules or tablets but ordinary cinnamon sprinkled on yogurt or cereal each morning will do the trick.

Eliminate as much animal products while greatly increasing the amount of live plant food and good fats such as monounsaturated fats and fish oils. My favorite is extra virgin olive oil because of the flavor. Try to not heat your oils to high temps.

Its simplier than you think. We need to consume large amounts of plants everyday and restrict animal consumption.

I know of a soluble fiber blend that supposedly binds with the free cholesterol in the gut before it can be reabsorbed. It is then eliminated.

You could try oatmeal or any other product made from oats as these are said to lower your cholesterol.

Hope your mum gets it down soon.
