When someone asks you to tell them about yourself - how do you define/describe yourself?

Interesting question. Generally speaking, if it's the first time, on the initial meeting, I am describing myself to someone, I describe my physical appearance and my interests in general, and where I work, but that's only if they are interested and I feel like sharing. Otherwise, I can as easily, and prefer much of the time, to keep it to myself. I don't need or want people to validate me.

I'd say I describe how I look first and then I'll describe my life, likes, etc.

For me it depends on the situation. I work for myself now but when I used to go for job interviews, I would describe myself based on what I thought the employer wanted to hear.

So I tailor what I say to the reason they are asking.

That said, I tend not to want to draw attention to myself so unless it's absolutely necessary I'll deflect the question. I'd rather the person get to know me and make their own conclusions.

Shoot it was too soon for me to read the question because I automatically added in mentally the other things smile I'll try again in a week or so to see if I've forgotten the gist of it.

I think the key is it can't be in person because then someone's already looking at you. So we have to imagine an email interaction when someone says "describe yourself".

Now to me it would come down to semantics. If it was an email and someone said "describe yourself" I would imagine they meant physically. But if they said "define yourself" I would imagine they meant morally. I'm not sure even if I sent an email to guys that if I said "OK describe yourself" that they'd do anything but email back a physical description. I could try it out and see wink

It would have to be another phrase ... maybe "tell me about yourself?" that seems more neutral ...
