What do you think, does a good cry help to cleanse our emotions?

I've read that "emotional tears" contain more stress hormones than let's say tears from cutting up onions.

So, can a sad movie like "Old Yeller" help keep us emotionally healthy?

I know that when I cry from something that is personally emotional (somthing in my own life) - it can leave me feeling drained and exhausted.

Crying from sad movie doesn't have this same effect. - But then most sad movies have some kind of redeeming end, so you cry and then there's the uplift at then end.

Crying from cutting onions is purely physical, and leaves me with no residual feelings whatsoever.

For myself a really big cry will often let out all emotions and I can look at the picture after wards with out emotion-which helps to choose with your head and not your heart.
Other times I also just feel like I am worn out like Michelle said already.

I think there are times that I bottle things up and if I finally just release and let them out - crying or not crying - it makes things much better. But crying for the sake of crying doesn't seem to help, and if anything it seems to make me feel worn out.

So I'm all for releasing your feelings in a healthy way. And I do like watching movies that make me emotionally connect with the characters. But for example I watched Atonement which is a depressing movie, and I came out feeling depressed. If I go in and watch a happy movie I come out feeling enthused and happy. So while I do enjoy movies of all types, it seems more healthy for me overall if I focused on happy movies wink
