Yes, but how does google decide how useful a page is? You are right (people have said that my London page is full of useful information tips but they are just common sense really)

I know there can't be a little person sitting with a notepad scrutinizing peoples' pages lol, but SEs are just bots right?

Maybe they just decide that if its duplicated several other places it's less useful?

There is something to be said for content dilution. Just like a diamond or a piece of art - the more unique, popular, and rare it is - the more value is placed upon it.

Google looks at how many unique sites and quality sites link to you. The PR of those sites will effect the PR of your site.

The sites you link to, also have an effect. If you link to a site with less PR than yours you "pass the Google Juice." Unless there's a <nofollow> in play.

What are you doing to promote your site?

The usual! Stumbleupon and all the other buttons, also a few article directories and my writing blog. Mostly though, I think the other writers take an interest!
Google seem to have been penalizing certain sites lately.

Well certainly it's true that Google considers some sites inherently more useful than others. If a new article is added to BellaOnline, because we've been around for so long and have a proven track record of high quality content, it often jumps to #1 in their ranking. If someone just created "zzyyyysyss.com" tomorrow and added an article on the exact same topic, they probably wouldn't jump to #1 with it.

I wonder if some sites started having duplicate content or link farmy content and got penalized because of that ...

Yes, I think that's true. On a few of the other sites I write for, several of the rising articles were from complete newbies - I think it's because their content was fresh and different and google hadn't seen it before. Nice for them though!

I always know when I read a Bella article , it's from a fellow editor's own experiences and I really like that aspect of joining Bella.

It's true you definitely need to keep on top of things with Google or at least stay diversified so that if you lose ranking on one site, you have others to fall back on, or other ways to make money.

Ok, BellaShorts, I'm going to go ahead and suggest you let me have my company do a full analysis of your site. It will be at no charge, I'll use you as a case study for future articles.

If that sounds good, touch base with me via PM, or twitter.
