Hey guys,

I have a 2 year old Yorkie, and he is wonderful. He was my first dog and my husband and I trained him by the book. He is going to Petsmart classes and is potty trained, is socialized, etc etc. We got him when he was 5 months old. We recently got a 10 week old maltipoo girl. She is really sweet, fun, and friendly, but a baby. I just need encouragement. Will it take time for her to LOVE her crate? Will she get the potty training thing?? I am just not a patient person and expect highly of my human companions and animal companions. We crate her when we are not at home, and periodically during the day on weekends. The pottying is going ok, we have only had her for less than 2 weeks. She is in a routine i think. I have not had a little baby as small as her and I am doing the exact training that I did with my yorkie boy. I just need to know that she will get better and that she will learn to be potty trained etc. My husband says I need to chill and have patience and faith in her.
It is hard with a small one!!!!!

First of all, she's not a baby, she's a dog. A puppy, I grant you, but you must start as you mean to go on.

Yes, your husband is right. You must exercise patience, perseverance and calm consistency.
Remember there are two kinds of training.
Obedience training, and behavioural training.
The two compliment one another, but they are quite different.
The sit, stay, down, come, heel is all obedience taining.
The staying in her crate, toilet training and position in the pack, is all behavioural training.

Get a Cesar Millan book or tape.
That will tell you all you need to know.
I highly recommend this.

Or borrow them from your library....

I could tell you, but I'm a professional dog behaviourist.
My advice and assistance costs money, and I'm not into doing this for free. I'm in the UK, you see.....

Good luck!

Then why did you bother to even answer Alexandra if you're not doing it for free?

Yes they're dogs, but they're our babies. I have a 13 week old Dane pup and he IS a baby.

I do agree with you, however, on the Milan book. yorkiesRcool stay calm and just keep consistent with the training. The baby will eventually get with the program. smile

I bothered to answer because I care enough about your dog to ask you to consider behavioural training.
I live in the UK, you live in the USA.
Would you honestly agree to paying for a full tutorial from someone so far away when you have a quasi-accessible expert "on your doorstep" as it were?

Of course you wouldn't - and I wouldn't expect you to either.
But I just wanted to bring cetain conditions and possibilities to youir attention, that's all....
