Most people are aware that cholestrol levels increase with stress. However, the explanation for this relation between stress and cholestrol has been quite narrow. The simple logic was that people tend to
eat more when they are stressed. Eating more food than is necessary obviously increases body weight and cholestrol in the body. There is a
new theory for the increase in body cholestrol caused by stress. This probably explains why some rather thin and skinny people are diagnosed with high cholestol levels. One explanation could be that such a condition is hereditary but, another major cause is easily forgotten.
The theory explains the reaction of the
brain to stress. When the body is stressed, the brain is unable to distinguish between physical stress and mental stress. The brain starts to prepare the body to fight the stress, energy is to be provided for this fight. The brain directs the liver to
release cholestrol which would act as fuel. The idea is for the body to burn this cholestrol during the fight against the stressful condition. But what happens if the stress persists for a long duration? The cholestrol remains in the bloodstream and causes various health problems. Similarly, the stress could be mental and a solution might not require the use of physical effort. The unburnt fuel shows itself up in high cholestrol levels.
One good suggestion is to, have some physical excercise when under stress. A brisk walk, jogging, cycling, swimming or a work out at the gym. This will help reduce cholestrol in the blood as it would be used as fuel during when a physical activity is performed. Most people react in a different way when stressed, some people prefer to stay calm and probably sleep over it. Others might over dose themselves with alcholic or caffeinated drinks, these do a lot of negative things to your health.
