The thing is, they said had it hit any other group, there would have actually been more dead.

The fact that it was the Boy Scouts, and they had the mergency training that they had helped save a lot more lives.

Although losing any child's life is a tragedy.

The boy from Eagle Grove, IA, was a cousin to a young man I work with. Everyone is struggling to make sense out of the tragedy. The tornado has been graded as an EF3 which is very large for this area. Ironically, the boys and their leaders had staged an emergency preparedness drill the day before, and yes, they say this saved lives. Already, the surviving boys, families, and supporters are looking towards rebuilding the scout ranch with underground shelters. I think this is helping the survivors cope with this huge tragedy. I have heard reports that are saying up to 60 tornados were spotted from northern Kansas to southern Minnesota that night. Mother Nature is not happy!

This has been a really bad year for tornadoes. Interestingly, I recently wrote an article observing that this year could be the worst season in 10 years. I agree that for most other groups the losses could have been significantly greater. Scouting does a great job of preparing our youth to plan ahead, think for themselves and assume responsibility.
