Here in Georgia there are two places I would love to go (one we actually do go to on a fairly regular basis)
Hiawassee/Helen - Helen is the little town based on Bavaria, we actually stay in the nearby town of Hiawassee - besautiful in the fall with the leaves changing. They have "fully loaded" log cabins up there that are major retreats. It's wonderful, we go up there at least once a year.
Savannah -I haven't been since I was a teen, but it is beautiul and romantic - similar to New Orleans vibe. Lazy, laidback, historical, a little bit of ghost mystery, and totally antebellum. It's beautiful.

In northern Nevada, Lake Tahoe is THE place to go. There are so many options of where to stay and what to do. Skiing and other snow sports in the winter, a beautiful lake for water excursions, hiking, sight-seeing, camping... it is awesome. If you ever go there, you should really try the hike along the coastal cliffs south of Camp Richardson and hike down to see Vikingsholm Castle, it is a beautiful little castle hidden away in a cove. The lady who had it built to strict specifications even had a Tea House built out on a little islet in the cove where she would meet visitors for tea. The history of the place is very intriquing. Here are two links to view. The setting of the castle is stunning! www.vikingsholm.com www.dupontcastle.com/castles/vikingsh.htm

Camp Richarson in Lake Tahoe has rustic log cabins to rent by the week, a Hotel (very old, but clean and comfy), resturaunts, boating fun and rentals and a great beach. There are campgrounds also and horse back riding through the forests. It is a great family get-away. Here are some links: www.camprichardson.comwww.camprichardson.com/resort/restaurants.cfm

In my province (Canadian, eh!) of Alberta, I would take a week to cycle the Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper, or relax on the sandy shores of Sylvan Lake, or hike a portion of the Continental Divide Trail (from Waterton towards the Crowsnest Pass), or paddle the North Saskatchewan River in the strokes of the voyageurs... ahh for a week's paid vacation (the paid part just doesn't happen for a freelance writer!).
Cheers, Megan

Good timing. I am planning a week-long trip for us right now in my state. We are going to Catalina Island. There will be both nice boutique hotels and backpacking on the beach.

I live in Washington DC and work in VA so my choice is Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Has anyone been there? I've been working with them and the park has so many attractions - I am going tomorrow and can't wait because I know it is going to be a blast! It is a nice in state vacation spot for VA locals because for Virginia residents, they have the option of buying a Fun Card -BellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. I live in NC (duh) and it would be either the ocean or the mountains. Both are nice, in different ways. The water is so warm at the beach, and there are a number of things to do; some of the best wreck diving is off the NC coast. The mountains, there's hiking and picnics and there's always the Go Blue Ridge Card. Go Card USA also has cards for many other US cities; my sister and I got 3-day ones for Boston, and saved at least $200 on attractions. We *are* going to Busch Gardens Williamsburg this year. One of our summer learning projects is going to be a book report and "field trip" to Colonial Williamsburg. My husband and I are planning to spend all day there and say, "it's too far to drive tonight, let's just stay over" and surprise the kiddo with Busch Gardens the next day. We're military, so it's a free day once a year. BellaShorts, I grew up in upstate NY. We used to take field trips to Watkins Glen for a tour through the state park and a boat ride on Seneca Lake. Watkins Glen International is right there, if you like auto racing. You can go Champy hunting; similar to Nessie hunting, there's a legend of a prehistoric monster that lives in Lake Champlain. Niagara Falls is in NY. The glass museum in Corning, NY is fascinating, if you're doing a tour of the southern part of the state. I grew up in the foothills of the Catskills, and I still think it's one of the prettiest parts of the country. Hills all over, covered in hardwoods, worth a trip in the fall.
