I finally got around to watching series 1 of Gavin and Stacey, and I really like it. This show is the perfect combination for me. Shows like Monk and The Office make me cringe because I feel so embarrassed for the characters. With Gavin and Stacey, by the time a scene gets to the cringe-worthy stage (usually when Brian is on screen) the writers switch gears and bring on the heart-warming dialogue.

Perhaps it is just because I am a big girl myself, but I love Nessa. She has a foul mouth and looks at sex like a man, but the writers didn't stop there. They showed that she does have a soft side and there are some things that get to her.

Believe it or not, the character of Smithy resonated with me as well. In my own life, my husband had friends who felt really left out when we got together. It's played for laughs in the show, but I've seen how hard it is for the last bachelor in a group of guys to figure out what to do with himself when everyone else is paired off.

All in all, I like this show. I just started watching series 2 and I hope the rumors of a series 3 are true.

Oh fabulous, I'm glad you got into this. It's no surprise that you find Nessa and Smithy to be the best characters - James Corden and Ruth Jones are not just the actors, but also the writers. I think it's clever how they portray quite flawed characters, but make them really work by giving them layers. I love the way Smithy loves Gavin with all his heart, despite being a complete lad.

I barely notice Gav and Stace at all! :-)

I don't know whether there will be a 3rd series, I think the writers may want to leave it on a high, but let's hope so. We'll defo get a Xmas special out of them.

I just finished watching the 2nd series and I am going through withdrawal! I'm thinking about rewatching both series again tomorrow :-). I usually wait years and years to rewatch a show, but these days there are so few new shows I really like, so I've been going back to old shows.

Another thing that makes this a more gentle comedy is the music. The show runners picked the most swelling score of modern pop hits. In a way it takes me back to Northern Exposure, which was the first show I remember to make use of songs with words in their score. Northern Exposure was also a show with absurd characters that could have grated on my nerves but the music made me feel their inner emotions.
