Oakland, CA - A newly released study conducted by Stanford University concludes that being physically active mitigates the development of disability in people over 50 years of age regardless of their size/BMI! This finding supports the position of the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) which proposes that people can enjoy Health At Every Size.

A growing number of research scientists, educators and healthcare providers support the HAES lifestyle. This way of life promotes making healthy food choices and adding movement to one's life, enjoyable movement such as swimming, dancing and walking. Recent research supports the fact that health is not determined by size, weight or BMI.

The new Stanford study concludes, "Public health efforts that promote physically active lifestyles among seniors may be more successful than those that emphasize body weight in the prevention of functional decline." NAAFA proposes that ALL people, regardless of age, would benefit by refocusing of our attention from weight to health at every size and that BMI is not a measure of health.

Founded in 1969, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) is a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for fat people. NAAFA works to eliminate discrimination based on body size and provide fat people with the tools for self-empowerment through public education, advocacy, and member support.

I totally agree, Moe!

I am a big girl, but also, (geez!) middle aged. But, I am quite active. I have noticed a lot lately that many younger, skinnier people can't keep up with me!

Plus, all my "numbers" are good--cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar. I attribute that mostly, to walking.
